Staff Favorite Recipes - Funny Bones From LuAnn C.

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Library asked their employees for their favorite family recipes and the stories behind them. We'll be featuring them over the coming months. First up are these adorable little pretzel and marshmallow "bones" from LuAnn.

On Halloween night each year, over 200 costumed characters descend upon our house demanding a trick or a treat. We are lucky enough to live on a street with sidewalks where most of our neighbors loved to turn on the porchlight and welcome little ghouls and goblins. Once my daughters were old enough to pass out candy at our door, they started inviting friends over to help out. That began our era of a table of Halloween treats for all the kids who came over to help dish out candy treats.

One of the recipes that my daughters asked for every year (and still ask for as adults) is Funny Bones. Even when they were younger they could help me squish the marshmallows onto the pretzels, dip it in chocolate, and let it rest on the cookie sheet. The salty/sweet blend is to die for.

The bones look great displayed in creepy-looking drinking glasses or cups.

Ingredients:

  • Half package (7 oz.) white meltable candy wafers

  • 36 pretzel sticks

  • 72 mini marshmallows (about 1 cup)

Instructions:

Follow the instructions on the candy wafers to melt the candy in a wide bowl. For each bone, press marshmallows onto both ends of a pretzel stick with the marshmallows' flat sides parallel to the pretzel.

Dip each pretzel into the melted candy to coat it. Lift it out with a fork, letting the excess drip back into the bowl. Place the bone onto a sheet of waxed paper to set at room temperature.
