The Mr. & Mrs. F. L. Schlagle Library and Environmental Learning Center is one of only two public library environmental learning centers in the United States. The library is the result of a unique partnership between the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, USD 500, and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County Parks and Recreation Department.

The library is located on the west side of Wyandotte County Lake Park, just north of Leavenworth Road and east of I-435. Parking is available in the lot directly in front of the library.

Road closure update 01/23/2026:
West Drive from Shelter 4 to the Mr. & Mrs. F. L. Schlagle Library will be closed beginning Monday, January 26, 2026 to repair a retaining wall along the road. To access the library, please use the northern entrance off I-435 and Wolcott Drive to enter the park on 93rd Street. Details regarding the project can be found in this news article from FOX4KC

Schlagle Programs

Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library offers special programming for area schools and organizations.

There are several field trip options both indoors and outdoors, including environmental education and outdoor skill lessons that align with the Kansas state education curriculum standards. Field trips are free for schools to participate in with bus stipends given to Wyandotte County schools.

In addition, the library also offers StarLab, an inflatable planetarium, for use on field trips and for homeschool opportunities. Please be aware that this structure occupies a significant portion of the library space when in use. Tables, animal ambassadors, and library collections are still available for use to the public during this time.

For more information on how to schedule programs and what type of programming is available, please reach out to our scheduling coordinators at flsinfo@kckpl.org or call the library directly at 913-295-8250.
