Welcome to our Library Joy Series in honor of National Library Week! Here we are highlighting some of our amazing staff to share how and why they love what they do. Next up is Alyssa, the Readers Advisory Librarian at West Wyandotte Library.
Why did you decide to get into Library work?
I love books and taking care of them! I volunteered in middle school for my school library and I thought it would make a really great career choice for me.
What is your favorite part about working for a library?
I love how creative I can be in this job. I also really love taking care of the collection and making sure everything looks good on the shelf. I do my best, but sometimes it gets away from me! I like mending and caring for the books, I think it's really important work, and it's fun.
Do you have a book or collections recommendation?
I really like the Jennette McCurdy memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died. It sounds very morbid but it is a good look into why she is who she has become and what the entertainment industry can do to a person. It was really eye-opening and I have a new appreciation of her as a person.
We have a big manga collection, and as a manga reader, I can always find something new to dig into! A manga I recommend is The Apothecary Diaries - if you love mysteries, history, and a little bit of girl power, you'll love this.
What's a fun fact about you?
I am a cosplayer! I love sewing and showing my love for my favorite fictional characters. I have been cosplaying for about 20 years, starting in middle school. The stories and characters are very important to me, I guess that also goes into why I work at a library!
Keep checking back all week to meet more of our staff or stop by one of locations today!
