The Mr. & Mrs. F. L. Schlagle Library and Environmental Learning Center is one of only two public library environmental learning centers in the United States. The library is the result of a unique partnership between the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, USD 500, and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County Parks and Recreation Department.

The library is located on the west side of Wyandotte County Lake Park, just north of Leavenworth Road and east of I-435. Parking is available in the lot directly in front of the library.

Schlagle Programs

Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library offers special programming for area schools and organizations. Find information here on how to schedule programs and what type of programming is available.

There is parking available inside the circle drive directly to the north of the Library. Two handicap parking spots are also available.

This facility includes two accessible parking spots. The building comes equipped with an elevator for access to the basement floor. It also includes two (2) unisex bathrooms, one of which is handicap accessible. The building has an ADA-compliant automated door opener. The trail and gardens are covered with wood chips, making them accessible for wheelchair users and parents with strollers.

Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library offers hands-on nature and science-based educational and outdoor recreational programs to school students and the general public. Teachers can bring their classes on field trips, or schedule outreach visits from F.L. Schlagle staff to their schools. The library offers family-friendly events on Saturdays including trail hikes, nature crafts, classes on Kansas natural history, and more.

F.L. Schlagle also offers summer camps for ages 5-15, spring and winter break programs, monthly homeschool science programs, monthly storytimes, and Scout workshops. The library holds two large scale events each year, the Lawson Roberts Butterfly Festival in September and Eagle Days in January.

In addition, the library has many live reptiles on display. There is also a “touch table” with many animal biofacts, scavenger hunts, and a nature trail. In addition, we are located near two of the Wyandotte County Lake Bridle Trail trailheads.
