Digestible Classics dives into the best books that are short enough for a busy schedule. Everyone is welcome, no matter your experience with classic literature. If you're new to it, this is a great place to start. This month we'll be reading Montage of a Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes.
Montage of a Dream Deferred is often published in large collections of Hughes's poetry. The poem that we will be focusing on is about 75 pages long.
Langston Hughes was one of the foremost writers to emerge from the Harlem Renaissance, renowned for his jazz poetry style. He was born in Joplin, MO, and mainly raised in Lawrence, KS. He moved to New York City as an adult to pursue his literary career. "Montage of a Dream Deferred" was originally published in 1951 as 91 separate poems depicting various scenes of Black life in Harlem over the course of 24 hours, beginning and ending with the line, "Good morning, daddy! / Ain't you heard?"
