Digestible Classics dives into the best books that are short enough for a busy schedule. Everyone is welcome, no matter your experience with classic literature. If you're new to it, this is a great place to start. This month we'll be reading The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy.
Leo Tolstoy is regarded as one of the greatest novelists of all time, best known for his mammoth novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Of his shorter works, "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" is held in the highest regard. It details the last days of a 19th-century Russian judge who falls terminally ill and reflects on his mortality in the evening light of a life of materialism. The injustice of his fate and his deteriorating relationship with his family are the basis for his introspection, despair, and potentially, spiritual salvation.
