Kansas City, Kansas, is the third largest city in the state
and the county seat of Wyandotte County. Formed in 1868 and incorporated in
1872, the city government consolidated services with the county’s to form one
unified jurisdiction in 1997.
The city is situated at the confluence of the Missouri
and Kansas rivers and is part of a greater metropolitan area of nearly 2
million people. The bi-state metro region encompasses Kansas City, Missouri,
and suburbs on both sides of the state line. Today, nearly 154,000 people call
Kansas City, Kansas and Wyandotte County home.
In recent years, Kansas City, Kansas, and Wyandotte
County have become the state’s major shopping and tourism destination. The
Kansas Speedway, Village West, The Legends, T-Bones Minor League Baseball team
and the Schlitterbahn Water Resort and Vacation Village (under construction)
add to the appeal, providing more than 400 acres of shopping, dining and
entertainment choices, as well as employment opportunities for many metro
residents.
The Kansas City metro is home to 10 Fortune 1000
companies, among them several companies with national or international
headquarters located in the metro. Other major employers include both the
University of Kansas and the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The metro
also has a number of smaller college campuses, among them the Kansas City
Kansas Community College.
Just minutes away, across the state line, are major
league baseball and football, a world-class art museum, the zoo, concert
venues, museums and historic sites. |
