Painting in the Light By Chris Langseth Chris Langseth was born on Valentine’s Day, 1950. His mother enjoyed created art as a hobby, and her enthusiasm and encouragement were an inspiration to him. At a very early age he began to appreciate art and spent hours sketching while growing up. In grade school, during art activities, he was amazed when classmates began to ask him for help. He didn’t know it at the time, but he had just begun his life’s work as an art educator.
Today he enjoys teaching art at Piper High School in Kansas City, Kansas. He had been teaching there for over 25 years, and find great satisfaction in helping students develop skills and discover that they can create something worthwhile and meaningful with their own hands.
Chris earned his bachelor’s degree at Central Missouri State and his graduate degree at the University of North Dakota. He has continued with classes and workshops throughout his career. He has also painted murals and signs for various local facilities, including Mid America Nazarene University, the Piper School District, Maranatha Academy and even the “Avenue of Life” sign on the medical clinic building across the street from this library.
Chris and his wife, Sue, have three children and two grandchildren.
“Creating art has been an important part of my life for a long time. I have often wondered why I enjoy art so much, and why do I feel compelled to keep working at it? The answer for me is in the belief that God has given each of us an ability or talent, and we feel most useful when we are exercising that ‘gift.’ Despite the trouble and confusion that seems to accompany our times, I hope my paintings reveal in at least a small way the beauty, serenity and hope that can be found in God’s creation.” --Chris Langseth
