Photographs By Dale Cole Dale K. Cole, OD is an optometrist in Salina, Kansas. His interest in photography began in 1982 as he took photographs during his eye care missions to Central and South America. The slides were used to tell the story of his ventures to interested civic groups. Occasionally he would discover a photo that begged to be enlarged.
Dr. Cole and his wife, Beverly, enjoy traveling and have found that her hobby of hiking and his hobby of photography blend well together. She has accepted the fact that she is hiking with the “man from the film ‘Bridges of Madison County’” with the floppy hat, a camera around his neck, tripod over the shoulder, and camera bag hanging off his hip.
Dale is a member of the Bluestem Art Gallery of Salina, a coalition of local and area artists of various media. He has shown his work at the Sandzen Memorial Art Gallery of Lindsborg, as well as other regional galleries and locations in the Salina area. Often his work has been selected for exhibit at the annual 5 State Photography Art Competition in Hays.
He has enjoyed applying his photography in collaboration with Ann Parr (writer) of Salina/Lindsborg on articles for the KANSAS! magazine. They have an article in the current Fall issue and will have one in the upcoming Spring issue.
The interest in photography continues to blossom as he moves into the digital age with camera and printer. (Note: None of the photos in this exhibit are computer enhanced.)
Dr. Cole’s pieces consist of various subjects--ranging from images found on personal vacations to photo shoots in the everyday environment to eye care missions. For example, in Africa they examined 4000 patients and then took 3 ½ days on a safari to shoot animals (with a camera only).
The Africa and Guatemala images in this exhibit were taken with a Pentax 35mm film camera. The photographic images taken along the coastline from San Francisco to Vancouver, B.C. were captured with an Olympus C-740 digital camera.
His biggest project was a 3-½ foot by 8-foot mural consisting of six of his photos blended by computer and used to cover a wall at his office.
Upcoming exhibits at the Kansas City Main Library in Aug/Sept 04 and the Argentine Library Sept/Nov 04 will cover areas of Central America, Haiti, India, Africa, Venezuela, Viet Nam and good ol’USA.
