The Costume Institute
"The world-renowned Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum possesses more than 75,000 costumes and accessories from seven centuries and five continents. Its nucleus is the collection of the former Museum of Costume Art, founded in 1937 by a theater-oriented group of civic leaders led by the philanthropist and savant Irene Lewisohn."

This site has information for costumers ranging from period dress to occupational dress, patterns, supplies, etc.
"These pages have, in the beginning, been dedicated to the fashion of the late 19th and early 20th century, especially to sewing patterns, the reason being that all my original (i.e. copyright-free) sources were from those eras. "The 'History of Costume' or 'Zur Geschichte der Kostüme' was printed from 1861 to 1880 in Munich by the publishing firm of Braun and Schneider. The total publication consisted of 125 pages, with four pictures per pages, for a total of 500 costume designs. These plates consisted of historical dress from antiquity to the end of the 19th century. This book is an excellent source for students who are studying the history of fashion and for costume designers."
